The main goal of the Somerset County Courthouse renovation and addition is to create a new expanded entry and lobby area to provide additional space at the security checkpoint, act as the central security point for the entire justice complex (to be renamed the County of Somerset Justice Complex) and provide a strong civic entry statement that is visible from Main Street. This new entrance addition will be a single story (approximately 2,400 SF) structure.

The Somerset County Courthouse was faced with a very small security checkpoint. The courthouse also had multiple entry points throughout the complex. They wanted to create a single secure point-of-entry that would accommodate the volume of people entering the facility each day. The County developed its own expansion and renovation concept, then turned to SSP to provide the design and engineering of the addition and renovation.

The expanded lobby provides an additional 750 SF of space for entrants as they wait to pass through the security checkpoint. In addition, the finishes of the new lobby will have been carried over into the existing lobby in order to create a cohesive looking entry.
