With an enrollment exceeding 16,000 students, the Edison Public School District is the fifth largest in New Jersey and the largest ROD (non-former Abbott) district in the state. Facing rapid enrollment growth, aging facilities, and capital improvement needs across 19 school sites, the Edison Board of Education engaged SSP to develop a comprehensive Long Range Facilities Master Plan (LRFP) to guide future decision-making.

SSP provided detailed planning and architectural services, including facility assessments, utilization, analyses, and enrollment projections, to identify both immediate deficiencies and long-term needs. The team evaluated options for building additions, renovations, and programmatic reconfigurations to address more than 3,000 unhoused students.

These services were essential in developing practical, phased solutions that balanced capacity demands, cost, and constructability. The master plan ultimately informed an immediate referendum strategy to expand the six most critical school sites, while also outlining future additions to support continued growth and the implementation of full-day kindergarten.

SSP also managed all LRFP documentation, data entry, and submissions to the New Jersey Department of Education. Despite the complexity of the District’s needs, SSP’s thorough coordination resulted in a seamless review process and rapid NJDOE approval. In addition, SSP assisted the District by managing enrollment in the Local Government Energy Audit (LGEA) program for all buildings, establishing a foundation for future energy efficiency and ESIP initatives.
