Middlesex County Magnet Schools (MCMS) is continuing to develop its instructional program in the relatively newer fields of supply chain management and logistics support, sustainable energy and construction, and cybersecurity. To advance their educational goals in expanding these majors, SSP Architects designed a new standalone school facility, which will become the sixth independent school for the district, enabling MCMS to expand their program offerings in these growing career sectors. The 80,000 SF new building, located on the campus of Middlesex College, will include a series of trade and technology labs.
The project was first concepted as part of the state’s Securing Our Children’s Future Bond Act, where it was awarded a $23,000,000 grant, the largest single state contribution for any project within the program. The project was then advanced as a part of Middlesex County’s 2023-2028 CIO (Community, Innovation, and Opportunity) Strategic Plan, where SSP worked closely with not only MCMS on the design of the new building, but also with input from the Middlesex County Commissioners, county administration, and Middlesex College.
Construction bids were received well within budget, and construction is currently underway, with the building slated to open to students in September 2026.
SSP’s design builds on MCMS’ success model for real world application with a facility that supports classroom education side-by-side with hands-on experiences. Designed with a layout encouraging cross-curriculum collaboration, and with sustainable features such as solar energy, reclaimed water, and an enhanced thermal envelope, the building will be a showcase for cutting-edge technology and processes being taught within its walls and ultimately deployed in the workforce.
